Today's the Day
First topic message reminder :
The new xbox is finally announced at 6pm today. I personally can't wait. But what are you hoping to see? And will you be preordering today?
I'm hoping for a blu ray drive obviously to get rid of the multidisk games (looking at you LA Noire) a bigger, faster hard drive so I'm not stuck with a 1 minute loading screen when I turn it on.
The biggest thing Hardware wise I'm hoping for is some kind of game/screenshot capture card. I want to be able to record clips from every game I play, take screenshots just by pressing a single button, when I find funny bugs or glitches, all without having to be connected to a pc. Would work out awesome for making video reviews to post on here.
Gamewise I'm hoping they announce that Grand Theft Auto V will come out on next gen consoles as a launch title as well as on 360/ps3. Not really sure what else they'll show really.

Re: Today's the Day
YAY Halo live action series. New Xbox looks pretty good too.
I liked the revel and it sounds like a very capable box. Has lots of features but the thing that was impressive was how fast it was switching between tasks, as this is the main problem I'd have with extra stuff like IE/NetFilm. They take away from the machine performing the gaming tasks I want it to do by filling the screen with a load of crap I don't use. It will be nice to have the extras integrated properly from the start so unlike the current box my gaming won't suffer because of them.
Don't care about backward compatibility I still have an Xbox and will have the 360. How many people have even ever played an xbox game on their 360 at regular intervals.
As long as it works offline the second hand game issue isn't a big deal. I hate online dependant stuff as you know some day it'll be turned off. You can always play local even years after the online parts have been disabled.
Regarding the lack of focus on games. even what they revealed was too much I thought. Would have liked to forward wind the Sports and Call of Duty stuff. They can cover the games stuff at E3 and I' doubt the performance will be far much different to what PS-4 is offering which is impressive.
It's cool there'll be plenty of new content coming out which might make me purchase the console sooner rather then later as I wasn't bothered with the crap on the 360 until Halo3. Also with Kinnect now on every box I'd say this current line between Kinnect games and normal games will blur as every game can have Kinnect without developers having to worry about some people not having the hardware. So I doubt the new IP's will be "kinnect" titles in the current sense of it.
Cloud server infrastructure they talked about was cool too. Sounds leagues ahead of the current offering and should be great for games like Destiny etc...
Lastly 1000 friends YAY. 100 is too small when you are on multiple forums and play popular social multiplayer titles like Mass Effect, Gears, minecraft and Halo. Mines full ages and when I look through it I'm hard pressed to pick anyone to remove.

Re: Today's the Day
the used games bit all seems a bit odd to me i am just gonna wait for after E3 and see what comes up. I may even wait till after release and even chirstmas to see how they both perform.
With the whole used thing what would happen with say a rental company then Surely thats them gone?

Re: Today's the Day
Good points from Tenners and Bassett methinks! Us "proper" gamers are going to become less important because we just wont be a lucrative enough market for MS etc. We already have the situation where browser games for casual users are worth much more money than our traditional console games. We are becoming the niche!! Companies will always go where the money is of course as we all know. That's the law of economics. The all in one box will be where it's at. The easier tech gets to use, the lazier we all become, and with the streamlining features of the Xbox one, we will grow to find even physically changing the input with our remote control to watch a different device a complete bind. All this voice controlled instant switching will make us even lazier and we will grow need an all in one more and more.
I have nothing against it all. My only concern is having a hardcore gaming platform to play on, but I fear that is a dying entity. God knows if we will get another proper generation on console after this, or if we'll have to make do with Candy Crush and Farmville.
Sony have said that they want the PS4 to be reminiscent of the great gaming days of PS2 so that gives a little hope, and like Tenners said, they at least have a proper gaming market in Japan still, I just hope they don't give up on Europe eventually, or I might have to move to Tokyo!
Nintendo is the last Bastion of proper gaming it seems, but they're shooting themselves in the foot as usual and may have to give up on hardware unless they bring out a proper cutting edge machine or up the ante somehow. ( I await the supposed new strategy announcement from our Ninty).
I think we need to do what we can to protect proper gaming, and to that end I've decided i'm gonna support the Wii U and i'm even gonna buy an Ouya when they arrive and try my best to support that initiative too. A cheap and dedicated games platform sounds like heaven at this point.
If all else fails, I'm just glad I have a lifetime supply of retro to get through!!
KEEP GAMING ALIVE PEOPLE!!!!

Re: Today's the Day
Not sure if M$ have thought this through properly.
The big reveal yesterday left most gamers feeling ignored and frustrated. Could be a huge loss in potential sales there.
The casual gamer isn't fussed about having bells and whistles attached to a console and will go for whatever is cheapest.
The family who want to watch films, listen to music and browse the web, they already have all the necessary equipment and gadgets they need. Will they be willing to shell out four hundred quid for what they already have?
Still trying to figure out who this thing is actually aimed at.

Re: Today's the Day
It's not the actual games (or lack thereof) that bothers me the most.
They're changing something that's been fundamental to my gaming experience for nearly 30 years. Borrowing, lending and swapping games has lead me to play games I may not have bothered with otherwise. Games which in a lot of cases I then went on to buy for myself. They can say it's a piracy issue, but if I've ever borrowed a video/DVD/blu-ray, I've never had to pay. They can say that the used market means developers miss out....that may well be true to some extent, but maybe if game budgets weren't spiralling out of control it wouldn't be such a problem in the first place.

Guess we are shit out of luck for a prize cupboard for the Xbox One!
I'm still going to wait until E3 before I decide whether I preorder or hold off to see if Santa brings me one.

Re: Today's the Day
one thing I really like the sound of from the X1 is that it is apparently going to be linked up to Microsoft's "Azure cloud computing"
essentially that means some of the processing power the console might need in the future will be done remotely meaning the X1 should always have as much if not more processing power than the ps4, wii U or any PC on the market has.

Just thought... Will I have to buy a new headset as well? Hope it has the same connection on the back as my current one cost me £60 and I have got so used to it I don't fancy replacing it just yet.

Re: Today's the Day
Oh shit.
Its just dawned on me.
I don't like the idea of a camera pointing at me all the time.
Will ruin the sitting in your pants not shaving for a couple of days gaming stuff.
This could be a deal breaker for me.
Nobody wants to see other gamers, nobody wants to be seen, nobody wants to use their real name either.
you must be able to opt out right?
Your X1 won't work without the kinect, so if the kinect is not connected you have nothing, if the kinect breaks you need a new one to continue gaming.
Microsoft, you dropped the ball here.
fuck kinect.
Maybe I really will become a full time Sony man afterall.
Hope I am wrong.

Although Kinect itself is apparently required at all times, I'm sure you'll be able to turn the camera off. Voice commands, not so sure. It's always listening apparently. Always.

Re: Today's the Day
Well as it stands after the 2 presentations launching the new consoles, i am currently turning to the darkside of Sony....... I will wait until after E3 and see what the games look like. I want a console to play games, and have other methods to use social networks and watch TV.
I'll probably end up buying both in the end though lol

AGH FFS!!! Glad I didn't shell out for the headset I originally wanted!!! Greedy gits, trying to control the market in everything again! If they actually make a decent headset then that's not so bad! But I hate when company's constantly change port sizes etc to screw you over and stop you from using existing accessories!
ignore me, i'm in a grump.
