Post  Leigh36295 Tue May 21, 2013 9:51 am

First topic message reminder :

The new xbox is finally announced at 6pm today. I personally can't wait. But what are you hoping to see? And will you be preordering today?

I'm hoping for a blu ray drive obviously to get rid of the multidisk games (looking at you LA Noire) a bigger, faster hard drive so I'm not stuck with a 1 minute loading screen when I turn it on.

The biggest thing Hardware wise I'm hoping for is some kind of game/screenshot capture card. I want to be able to record clips from every game I play, take screenshots just by pressing a single button, when I find funny bugs or glitches, all without having to be connected to a pc. Would work out awesome for making video reviews to post on here.

Gamewise I'm hoping they announce that Grand Theft Auto V will come out on next gen consoles as a launch title as well as on 360/ps3. Not really sure what else they'll show really.

Apparently you WILL need a new one! Mad

DAMN IT!!

AGH FFS!!! Glad I didn't shell out for the headset I originally wanted!!! Greedy gits, trying to control the market in everything again! If they actually make a decent headset then that's not so bad! But I hate when company's constantly change port sizes etc to screw you over and stop you from using existing accessories!

ignore me, i'm in a grump.

Its fun to talk about it all.

I do feel both sony and M$ will both kill the preowned market as publisher and developers get screwed over when we don't buy from them.
Its only fair really.

Really can't get over the kinect thing though.

I don't like the idea of doing my hair just to play xbox!

None standardised accessories just limits peoples options Crying or Very sad on the other hand. Excuse to buy new kickass headset incoming.

as to PS-4 or X1 it'll be X1 for me as Halo is my go to game and Sony don't have it. Everything else is gravy.

Post  kinmad4it Thu May 23, 2013 12:07 pm

I still don't understand the preowned argument, the one against it that is.

They seem to be the only industry/business that feel entitled to more money once their product has been sold.

You buy a new car, it's yours to drive and if your wife/husband/son/daughter/cousin/friend want to drive it and have the insurance, they can! They don't have to pay Ford/BMW/Fiat or whoever a fee because you bought it and it's yours. They don't expect you to pay them a fee when you buy a second hand car they made 5 years ago.
You buy a DVD/Bluray and it's yours to do with what you want. Sell it on, lend it to a friend. MGM, Universal don't come knocking on your door because you've let your mate borrow it and watch it on his own player in his own house. That's also digital property, but once you've paid for it, it's yours.

Why should the gaming industry feel they are somehow special and are entitled to more? It's not about them losing business or revenue. I don't see the car manufacturers or movie studios crying about lost revenue and having to go out of business because of second hand sales, what makes the games industry so different? It's not about keeping servers up and running as most games are peer to peer, even Halo picks the best connection from those in the game to host it, no server required. Those costs should be and probably are, included in the initial sale of the game, the mark up on them is still astronomical. I doubt Cliffy B lives in a bed sit and drives a 20 year old Fiesta to work.

I don't actually bother with buying many games pre owned as they're usually cheaper online after a few months and brand new as well. I just don't see how they can justify this feeling of entitlement when other similar industries don't. Lets face it, the biggest and loudest voice against this is and always has been, EA! We know how they operate and it's basically they see a potential loss of money they could somehow be getting, even if they're not entitled to it. The others follow suit and we're in the situation we're in now. They've cried and bitched and moaned for so long that some people are actually believing their dogma and agreeing with them.

Ok then, even if we accept that it's to keep servers running and maintained sufficiently, then why should they feel entitled to money from the sales of second hand single player only games? It's simple! Greed!!

Will it literally always be live as in you have no choice but to let people see you as you game?

If that is the case mine is getting a flumping sticker put over it! I hate that idea. I don't even like having a webcam on my laptop, I always cover it, afraid some one will hack it some how! If I'm at home gaming, it means I am chilling out and having a slob around day! I don't want to have to worry about what I'm looking like/ what I'm doing/ if the house is clean etc! Sad *crys*

I have a Kinect and the camera is always on but I don't think that means people can always see me! How could they unless you are connected to video chat or something?

The main problem I am experiencing with my current Kinect is when I am watching something on Netflix the Kinect picks up sound and will suddenly pause or stop the programme. Also if I am on Skype on my laptop, or the phone and the Xbox is on the Kinect picks up my voice or movements (I gesticulate alot) and the Xbox starts going crazy!

Edit: just to clarify, camera is only on when the Xbox is on.

Turning the mic off would kind of defeat the object of everything they were showing at the reveal! Hopefully they have made the Kinect clever enough so it knows when you are talking to it and not just having a general conversation. Or at least be able to tell the difference between my instructions and the TV.

If this is true and implemented on the X1, then it's taking DRM to a whole new level and kind of proves that the Kinect is gonna be ALWAYS looking at you.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

Basically that means that they could say that a film is only to be viewed by 4 people, so shuts off if there are 5 people in the room. Probably an extreme example, but still worrying.

Post  Tenlo Fri May 24, 2013 3:17 pm

Right I always wonder why people complain about why games companies are so anti-used games. The reason is the amount of money which comes back is small compared to films and cars. Films get two sets of revenue in, firstly from the initial run in the cinema then the secondary release through retail copies. Plus films often don't make all their money back but they have sponorship deals and merchandise to make some money back and a lot of their income will come from investors too.

Cars again make a huge amount of money when they are first sold, its a well known fact that the minute the car is driven off the forecourt the value instantly drops in half its value. Also who has ever owned a car and traded in two weeks later for a new one?

That's the main issue nowadays, that shops give too much incentive to trade in games quickly and recieve pretty much your full money back. Which they can then sell on and take all the money for. The game shops don't help themselves by purposefully making pre-owned games their biggest area of sales with new titles often relegated to a single shelf.

The other thing to conisder is that your average game takes about 3 years to make, most films dont take that long to make and for most of those three years you're hiring a full team of developers, programmers, artists, sound engineers, QA's plus more. Films often have the largest amount of staff only during filming which often doesn't take more than 6 months to do. That is a huge amount of cash being used to create games. And game prices have barely changed over the years, I remember a SEGA Megadrive game costing between £30 and £45 a go, which is pretty much the usual price now event though overheads and development costs have skyrocketed.

If you don't think that this affects developers and publishers look at THQ. Darksiders was a huge success critically and yet no-one wanted to buy it up initially because they knew it was a game with little long term value. Once you finished it you had no reason to go back and play it so you just traded it in. We all bemoan the lack of new IP's and sequels coming out but unless we're going to buy the games we do ask for when they come out nothing is going to change. I've always made an effort to buy Suda 51's games whenever they come out even if I never get roudn to playign them and trade them in before I finish them, because I want to support the guy, same with Double Fine. In fact Double Fine and their kickstarter project showed a possible future way of making games, put your money up front and we'll make the game. But these sort of titles won't appear on consoles due to the extra costs involved in producing them.

Pre-owned games are exactly the reason why Sony and Microsoft are both moving away from just being a games console, and trust me Sony are playing the gamer card for now, but I'm sure we'll see similar features from the X1 appearing with the new PS4.

Plus here is the biggest bug bear of Pre-owned games, how many of you guys have bought a pre-owned game because you've seen it cheap and just added to the pile of games you mean to play. I know I've done it. If we literally bought one game brand new by the time we'd finished it and got all our fun out of it we could easily afford to buy another brand new game.

Sorry for the rant, but pre-owned games only really help one person out in the long run and that is the game shops who can't compete with online prices and are slowly shooting themselves in the foot byt pushing such a pre-owned friendly business model

have to say I was very impressed with the reveal, still see a lot of people who complain that they didn't talk about games even though they said this was about the hardware and E3 will be about the games

be able to record and then edit your gameplay on the console is fucking awesome Very Happy

still wont be getting one for at least year going to be too expensive for me and would also would rather wait until theres aload of games to make the purchase worthwhile from the get go

Tenners !! nice view on preowned but at the end of the day , these people don't do what they are doing for free. They all make money and alot of it. It just depends on how greedy people are.
The preowned market is just a side line that the developer can't control. Do ford make money on a second hand car. NO. I realy don't get why this is such a talking point in the games industry. Accept a second hand market or fuck off and sell washing machines.
