Modern Warfare 2 Rip Off Empty Modern Warfare 2 Rip Off

Post  KENT HAMMER Wed Aug 12, 2009 5:22 pm

I have been meaning to post this for a few days now.
COD Modern warfare 2 will retail for £54.99 this Nov when released.

This to me is taking the piss!
They know its the most popular franchise and they are milking us for cash because of it!

I will 100% be boycotting this title for other great titles that retail for £39.99 rrp

Why on earth is this game worth £15 more???

Its reallly important in my view that we all boycott this game on release as it will only send the message that this is ok and mark my words £54.99 will soon become the new standard price point.

Modern Warfare 2 Rip Off Empty Re: Modern Warfare 2 Rip Off

I don't see this as too bad actually. Remember most games actually have a RRP of £49.99 which is why occasionally places still sell new games for £45 (which is madness since everywhere else sells them for £39.99!). Hell, it still costs almost full price for new copies of COD4 (which I'm sure was sold most places for £45 when it came out, with used copies being not much cheaper. I can see this happening again with MW2, with retailers taking a tenner off the RRP and flogging it for £45. A quick look at play.com and zavvi shows this seems to be the case.

It's all well and good to say to boycott the game, but the sales of this are still going to be through the roof, and it won't make any difference.

Your opinion is great input mate.

Of course I can only speak for myself, but I truly believe that without some sort of stand by us the consumers then the prices will go up for all of us.

I feel the same way about avatar clothing (nickle and dime us to death) and dont even get me started on the games on demand bend me over a barrel and shaft me system.

I agree 55 squid is a complete piss take but millions of gamers will not be put off by that, and buy the game on release date. Me, I think I'll wait a few weeks/months and find it for £35/40 somewhere. I do feel that Activision are ripping off their fans, even more so with the £150+ special edition featuring working night vision goggles. Who the f*ck's gonna buy that perverts, stalkers and people with restraining orders I bet.

Cast your minds back a good 17yrs, and the advent of the EPL and Sky's Pay Per View. My old man says "Only a flumping idiot will pay for that. We're already on the full sky package, so I'll not pay more to see football I should be watching as part of said package. If every one does the same, they'll have to knock it on the head and give it to us as part of the package" But no one did, except us, and now a massive percentage of footy on sky is pay per view. And boxing. Even the NFL, ffs!

My point being, this will be just the beginning. I recall SNES games costing up to £60 so maybe we've had it too good too long...

Or get your Xbox chipped Laughing

I think it is a ridiculous price, even more so for the special edition thingy, however people will still pay it! I know a couple of people that are getting the special edition one and as far as I know they don't have restraining orders and they are no more pervy than the average male.

I also know of people going to get the special one! me im just getting the normal one. Yes it is alot to pay but cod4 is still one of the best and i think cod mw/2 is going to be as good or better. Because of that i will pay that amount.

But as for paying sky more money to watch football its a big NO and my family do not do it even now.

This price everyone seems to be complaining about of £54.99, are you talking about a limited edition because if so I can't see the point in complaining. I'm only paying £39.99 for mine from Game for a standard edition.

I remember there being a hullabaloo like this when Virtua Racer was released for the Mega Drive, it cost about 60 quid back in 1994 which could have bought most of Hull in those days. But I digress, no chance I'll be paying 55 notes. As a previous poster has pointed out though, the stores will probably be sensible about it. In my experience independant retailers (especially Grainger Games up here) knock a few quid off and Asda is usually cheap as chips. That's if you don't mind feeding the evil corporate monster that is Wallmart of course. I for one do not.

the head of Activision has already said that he wants to raise the prices of more of activisions top titles following the strong pre-order sales of MW2. i am sure that they already make massive profits on these games, in my opinion the prices should be coming down rather than going up.

Its funny you can go and see a movie in the cinema and buy it on dvd when it come out for less than £10, and movies cost hundreds of millions of dollers to make, games cost a fraction of that to develop but still cost £40 when they are released.

Can you blame him though? hes head on a stock listed company? - his job is to raise profits... raising the price of a monster game (as MW2 is/will be) is only going to raise profits..

hah, you should have been around before DVDs & the sell-thru market came about..

in the UK, films would be released on cinema, then around 8 months later they would hit VHS rental where it would cost around 50 pounds per tape..
then after 2 years it would hit television..
Then came satellite, & the television market became 3 years, & satalite was around a year & half..
finally came the sell-thru market & it was cinema -> 8 month rental -> 12 month sell thru -> sat & then TV
then DVD came & suddenly film companies saw the money in removing rentals & replacing with the sell thru directly.

also, remember when dvds first came out.. they wheren't the sub 10 quid they are now.

thing with films, if you make a classic, you can sell it over & over.. initial DVD, then directors cut, then extended cut, then HD, then 'pack-ins'

same with music.. advert on TV at the mo for 3cds of ' best of 90s' - its costing them nothing to produce that..

games though, sell well on launch & then depreciate quickly.. graphically they drop down & newer games replace, & the 2nd hand market doesn't give money to the game developers.. COD seems to be the exception to this which is why it hasn't dropped in value much (which is probably also why they're raising the prices..)
how many people are buying Rayman rabbids or Chromehounds or Shadowrun new these days?

Its just down to your own personal standards really.
I am just not comfortable with activision as a company so openly saying they are going to push the price up by £15.

But I am not a fan of the series anyway so easy choice for me.
I dont like it because I find it has the highest concentration of young abusive players online than any other game.
Also people are not up for helping newer players out.
So I don't own COD4 or CODWAW
But if they ever drop to £15 pre-owned I will snap them up.

Budget and pre-owned is where its at!
I bought COD2, Overlord, Universe at war and Sega superstar tennis for £20 last week from Blockies
Very Happy

Loads of people are making a fuss of how expensive MW2 is going to be.

It's actually only about £5 more than most games. Most RRPs for xbox games are £50.

As for films being cheaper, noone forces film studios to adhere to certain standards, it's just on their own heads if their film's crap. With consoles, the company that makes the console can stop the game if they wish. Plus having to recode games for different systems and there's a LOT more DVD players out there than consoles.

Weirdly Digi is the biggest MW fan I know Laughing

The cheapest you can buy it right now even online seems to be £44.99, where most new games cane be found for £29.99 or defo £34.99

So its at least £10 more.

So you take your choice in life, do you think its worth £10 more than all other games on the 360????

I personally don't and will never pay more just because they think they can squeeze us for more money.

hand on heart I am sure you all realise that you are in fact shooting yourselves in the foot here and that it will just be the first of many new titles to add an extra tenner.

Most big titles are £40 at release so it's only likely to be maybe £5 more. Remember you're talking about the sequel to the most popular online game on consoles ever (they picked up a world record at E3) on a console where Live is one of the biggest attractions.

Maybe I'm not the right person to talk to about this, I was trying to find a prestige edition to spend £120ish on! Damn thing, still getting the hardened edition though. Bought WaW back yesterday so when MW2 comes out, I'll only be missing CoD2 from the entire series (though I'll probably have it by then).

Hmm.. I think I have a solution for people Cool : Buy the prestige edition with the Night vision goggles & you can save money by using them instead of turning lights on in the house..

so, lets see. price of say 3* 100 watt light bulbs running 6 hours a night @ 31p KWh = £0.558 for each night.
Plus Darling's slush fund, works that out .64 pence per evening.

So, the Prestige edition works out at a RRP of £119.99 & the normal edition is 49.99, so that means a cost difference of £70
So, therefore, you an save money if you use the nightvision goggles instead of those lightbulbs for a total of 109.09 days (actually, to make money, you need to hit 110 days)

there you go.. now you can justify why you should also get the NV goggle things. Wink

Edit : hmmm.. Seems its harder than I thought to find actual details of how much companies charge on KWh for leccy.. so if the charge is less, then expect the number of days to be wearing them goggles to go up.. You fashion victim you!
