Gamerscore Addicts official review of "Rise of the Argonauts" a Codemasters game.

Rise of the Argonauts a Codemaster game Rise_of_the_Argonauts_Banner

This game was kindly donated to the forum for review by the guys at Codemasters.

Ok firstly let me say upfront I have my own style to reviewing games and will hopefully avoid giving away any plot
twists as that could ruin a fun play thru of such a story focussed action RPG game.

This is a great example of a game that requires time and effort to be enjoyed to its fullest.
I managed to get 665/1000 achievement points with one play thru of the game on legendary setting.
There are also 2 other lower difficulty settings, but as they are stackable I suggest going for Legend right from the start.

Being blunt there are two main problems that this game suffers from, firstly its seriously chat and conversation
heavy. The first 2 whole hours of the game are near non stop chat to NPC's etc.
But you are constantly involved as all your reply's are aligned to a particular god (4 gods in total).
This is why its hard to gain all 1000 points from one playthru as you have to max out favor with all 4 gods during
the game.

I only managed to max out one of the four and was one more dedication away from completing two.
So I really recommend saving very often that way you can go back and play the game dedicating your achievements to
a different Deity.

Secondly there are some graphical glitches, such as invisible walls and some voice synch issues. Plus there is a
little overuse of some of the character models.

Its almost as if the developers had to rush the game out to a deadline, as I feel with 6 months more polish and we
would be talking about a stellar 10/10 title!

Ok, but please don't be thinking any of the above take away from what is a good solid action rpg. The voice acting
is top notch and way above the normal tripe we see and hear.
Plus the main characters are well animated and the lead Character Jason truly stands out and is fun to play.

If you enjoy other RPG games or fable, oblivion and Fallout 3, then I am certain you will enjoy this game.
Even better if you love a good story and enjoy the whole Greek mythology angle like I did.

For some reason the game reminded me of a mythological "magnificent seven" were you are slowly putting your posse
together and building up to some bigger battles ahead.

The game has a great leveling system were you get to decicate your completed deeds to the god to gain extra power
ups and skills. Plus you get to unlock God powers that can be activated using the d-pad.

Alot of the achievements are based around completing various constellations of the stars. Each constellation will
be made up of various challenges, like kill 100 soldiers and make 50 conversation choices for Athena etc.

Now onto my favourite part of the game, the fighting and boss battles!
Its truly a button basher of the highest order BUT you do need to block and use your shield alot otherwise you will
be toast very quickly. If you do get killed during a battle you are simply revived and must start that battle again
from the beginning.

You have to pay attention to the foes movement patterns and you soon work out how best to tackle them.
There is a choice of 3 weapons that are quickly swapped using the RB button.
Sword, Mace and Spear (which can also be thrown and pin enemies to the wall, AWESOME)
As you progress thru the story you will be given better versions of the same weapons for completing certains
requirements or defeating a boss.

The battle animations and different kill types were very gory and satisfying!
Chopping the enemy in half or decapitating them!
Or even jumping ontop of them and plunging your sword deep into there skull.
It does not hold back on this and is even quite shocking on occasion.

Overall I liked this game and will play thru it again to get the achieves I missed the first time thru.
so this tells its own story and I would give the game a solid 7 out of 10.
But if you are an rpg and story telling fan then it would easily be an 8 or 8.5
Like I said earlier, if only they had added that bit more polish then this would be a must own classic.
It does use the Unreal engine so no complaints there.

Thanks for taking the time to read my first review and I can't tell you how hard it is to do without giving away
any key plots points that might spoil it for you.

This has been a Gamerscore addicts review, for gamers by gamers Cool

Nice review, very objective. Smile Sounds like it could be a great game if you have the patience to sit through all the dialogue at the start (which to be honest, I wouldn't hehe).

This was reviewed by a GAMER for a GAMER not from a gamers mag who do this for a living.

i'm a HUGE rpg fan but if i'm honest, the review over at Eurogamer and 360 magazine really put me off this otherwise i was going to get it at release.

I may look at it when the price comes down.
