Wolfenstein The New Order

In this First Person Shooter you play as William "B.J." Blazkowicz and your humanity's last hope against the Nazi War Machine. In Wolfenstein The New Order the Nazi's have won World War II thanks to there advanced tecnology of robot dogs and mechanised soldiers with laser cannons made by the antagonist of New Order General Deathshead forcing the whole world to surrender and since then he has continued to advance Nazi technology.



People are forced into labor camps to hep the Nazi cause the rest are forced into curfews unless they want to feel the Nazi wrath and brutality or be experimented on giving our hero Blazkowicz reason enough to join a resistance group and mount a counter offensive and do what he does best and kill Nazi's.



Wolfenstein is a shooter that makes killing Nazi's throughout the campaign extremely fun and enjoyable with over the top gore. Nazi heads explode limbs vapourize and blood sprays from bodies which I think looks awesome on the Xbox One.


Blazkowicz has a wide range of weapons from pistols, assault rifles, shotguns, sniper rifles and laser rifles along with grenades and throwing knifes. All these weapons are fun to use. Although you has access to all the weapons by about the half way point of the game, upgrades like scopes and grenade launchers are given out at a good enough pace to make sure you don't get bored using the same ones over and over again. You can just about duel wield every weapon in the game but it will come at a cost, yes it will deal more damage but you'll go through your ammo very quickly and have to handle with the extra recoil.


There is a perk system which is different from other games. Normally you would level up and spend points on what perks you want but in Wolfenstein to get your perks you have to complete things in game like kill so many enemies while leaning from cover, stealth kills from behind or with throwing knifes or kills with thrown back grenades. Every perk has an achievement to go along with it.

Once the fighting starts the cover system gives some respite from the enemy fire. The cover system is really easy to use all you do is stand behind a wall or crouch behind some sot of barrier you can find and press the cover button and use the thumbstick to lean left or right or to look over or under your cover. Eventually your cover will slowly disappear due to enemy fire but will prove useful during tougher encounters.
The wonderful level design adds enjoyment to each firefight whether your going through a labor camp, prison or through underground tunnels, because of this there is plenty of room to breathe and maneuver through each level and you rarely feel that your going through a too-cramped area, instead you are fighting in open areas with plenty of ammo and health and armour from dead enemies.

Most of the levels have different paths you can use like ventilation systems or side corridors which makes it possible for you to go into any fight with some sort of plan rather than heading in all guns blazing, this however will take a backseat when you come up against powerful enemies. When you do come up against tougher enemies the gameplay can go from fun to frustration as you go through every ounce of ammo to take them down and then you will have to rely on your battery powered weapons. When they run low they will recharge enough to give you one shot then recharge again or you can run around and look for a recharge station and wait a few seconds for your weapons to recharge whilst getting shot at.




Some of New Orders missions are more slow and boring than fast and enjoyable like walking through tunnels looking for a welding torch is quite boring just like going through sewers filled with flying drones. These missions do feel out of place going up against Wolfensteins other awesome set piece moments. There is action in the heart of plenty of missions but the ones that stand out are the more tense and subtle scenes like taking a new identity to stow away on a train filled with Nazi's when one of the games most wicked characters sits across from you and tests the purity of your blood through a nerving mind game.




Wolfenstein isn't all about the action. Blazkowicz is an interesting person giving internal monologues with the right amount of drama and they do provide an insight to his wants and needs and at times can be cheesy but with great voicework they sound believable.The other membersof Wolfenstein also come in to there own which makes you feel more invested in there cause. Some of the other characters do feel under used and underdeveloped which will make it hard for you to care about them during some of the story's dramatic scenes.

At times it feels like Wolfenstein can't decide how serious or silly it should be where deep monologues give way to cutscenes in which heavy rock music blasts up to full gear while B.J. engages in brief exchanges with his resistance comrades. The serious drama and the B-movie comedy do go together really well, getting you pumped up and also making you laugh.

Wolfenstein seems to be a good example of old school design revitalised by modern concepts. Yes at time the game can be a bit cheesy and over the top but it manages to counter act them with awesome action and memorable set pieces and characters that evolve beyond your normal first person shooters. Also the moment you dual-wield two laser guns to take down Nazi's I swear you will be playing the rest of Wolfenstein with a smile.


Wolfenstein The New Order is single player only which I think was a good idea because some games tend to have either a really good single player with a poor multiplayer just bolted on or the other way aound, a decent multiplayer but a poor single player. I honestly didn't feel like I missed out without any multiplayer.

I will give this game a 9/10 as I loved the action of shooting hundreds of Nazi's which never gets old. The set pieces and scenery look great as well. If like me you enjoy you FPS games this is a must play game.

Started this yesterday and couldn't put it down! Agree with your review, what a brill game, and for a non-shooter fan that's saying something. Defo gonna pick it up on the XBone as well

Nice review fella, sorry I forgot to post when I read it the first time round!

I have this on the xbone and have to agree with your review. Enjoying the game looks like a couple of play throughs to get some of the cheevos.
Wish it was the winter so i had more time to play this game.

You can get most of the achievements in one play through, you may have to go back through it to get the collectables and some upgrades. Like Lightly said you can do the last level on Uber difficulty to get the complete game on Uber achievement.

Can't wait to get this,
