The Videogame Music Quiz Thread
This is an idea I've been thinking about for a couple of weeks on here. I did steal the idea from another forum, but had a lot of fun with it there a while back so thought I'd liberate the concept! Now the Empire retro music quiz thread posted last week has died down a bit, I figured it's time to get this one up!
The basic premise: someone posts a YouTube video they have made with a number of videogame music snippets in, and everyone else has to guess what they are. The music can be from any game on any format, so long as it actually recognisable in some way. Anyone can post a video, but only once all tracks in the current video have been guessed correctly.
I've created a video to start us off with 10 tracks, I think most of it will be quite easy this time round (try not to guess them too quickly!), but there may be a couple of tricky ones!
I will keep a list of the tracks as people guess them. This will be posted in a spoiler so people who haven't seen the thread yet can still guess if they want to!
Scoreboard will be formatted as follows:
GAME NAME - FORMAT - PART OF GAME - GUESSED BY
Video number 1 coming up shortly!
HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN MUSIC QUIZ:
You will need (assuming you're a Windows user):
- Firefox with DownloadHelper extension installed.
- Any Video Converter
- Windows Movie Maker
- A YouTube account
(All of the above are free!)
STEPS:
1. Write a list of 20 pieces of game music you want to include in your quiz.
2. Obtain a bunch of MP3s for your selected music. If you have them on CD soundtrack, rip them using Windows Media Player or iTunes. If you don't have them, find them on YouTube and use the Firefox extension DownloadHelper to rip the mp4 file.
3. Anything you downloaded from YouTube will need to be converted into MP3. You can use Any Video Converter for this task - simply drag your mp4 videos into the program, select MP3 as the profile and hit the Convert button.
4. Use video editing software of your choice - a freebie like Windows Movie Maker does the job perfectly well, but you might prefer something else. I will assume you're using Windows Movie Maker for the rest of this, as it comes with Windows XP as standard, and is freely downloadable here for Windows Vista/7/8.
5. Drag your 20 MP3 files into Windows Movie Maker, then drag them all onto the audio track on the timeline in the order you want them. Use the 'split' tool (Clip > Split) to cut the tracks into rough 30 second chunks. Right click on each audio track and select 'Fade in' and 'Fade out' as appropriate.
6. Create titles (Tools > Titles and credits) for each one, saying 'Game 1' to 'Game 20'. Also create a title if you want - 'Waggly Bean's Music Quiz' for example.
7. Save the project incase you want to come back and make any edits or correct mistakes (File > Save Project As).
8. Save the movie file (File > Save Movie File). You can use all the default settings for ease, so click 'next' until it starts to create the video file.
9. Log into YouTube and upload your video. Go to the video and copy the URL from the address bar.
10. Come back to GSA and embed your video using the YOUTUBE tags or 'video' button. Add a set of numbers 1 to 20 in a spoiler tag, and post it.
11. Edit the post and fill in the answers inside the spoiler tag as people guess them correctly, using the format:
GAME NAME - FORMAT - PART OF GAME - GUESSED BY

By the way folks if you are into retro game muzak and want to hear them remixed brilliantly then I would point you all to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
grab the three big collections at the bottom (the 1 to 2500 stuff)
I just refreshed my collection from them recently having only had 1-1500 for the last few years.
Seriously great stuff

Re: The Videogame Music Quiz Thread
Nice thread mate, I can only get the first one at the moment, which Stu already guessed. Some of the others sound really familiar though, so I'll have another listen later, hopefully I'll be able to get a few of them.

Thanks, and yeah you got that one!
Thanks kind of expected you to get a couple of these straight off the bat though judging by how many you got in the Empire one.Everton wrote:Matey what a great quiz

I love OCRemix, although I haven't visited in probably a couple of years now. Wasn't aware you could get it all in big packs though, I used to download tracks I liked individually!! I used to work in a gaming shop and we made a few MP3CDs with loads of OCRemix tracks on them. They always went down really well with customers.Everton wrote:By the way folks if you are into retro game muzak and want to hear them remixed brilliantly then I would point you all to [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

It's annoying when you know it but can't quite place it, isn't it? Keep on thinking!!Ninja Yaro wrote:Nice thread mate, I can only get the first one at the moment, which Stu already guessed. Re: The Videogame Music Quiz Thread
They seem pretty hardcore to me these mate!! I thought i knew a bit about games but i've been reduced to a blubbering wreck with these!! Lol!!
I got about 30 of the Empire quiz ones. It depends which games you've encountered in your time I suppose! Can't play em all!
I forgot a lot of the music from the Amiga days though, plus i never played many PC or handheld games so there are big gaps in my knowledge there!

Re: The Videogame Music Quiz Thread
Sorry guys, honestly thought some of these would be easier. Maybe there's not enough retro in there!
I suspect perhaps I'll have to offer more than 10 in the next one so it gives a broader range of games and gives everyone a better chance at guessing some. I'll try to throw in a few more super-easy ones next time too.
OK, for the remaining ones I will list the format of each, and hopefully this should help. (HOPEFULLY!!!)
2. Mega Drive
3. Xbox 360
4. Xbox 360
5. Dreamcast/PS1/N64
6. PS2 (shocked nobody has got this one!)
7. Xbox 360
8. Mega CD
9. Dreamcast/GameCube
And here's the vid again so you don't have to scroll back up!
More clues will appear for ones that still can't be identified. Also, if you're not sure, feel free to make wild guesses!

Re: The Videogame Music Quiz Thread
You know I have a folder with a bunch of music in that I've got together for these quizzes, and somehow none of that stuff ended up in this first one. No idea how that happened!Everton wrote:sadly my ears are tuned in to miggy stuff and c64 stuff more than megadrive

Yeah if you've played number 2 it should be very recognisable. Cryptic clue: envious pet.

One of the creepiest games I played back then. So under-rated!
