The Sacrifice DLC for L4D2 by Garymason72

The Sacrifice is the newest piece of DLC for the highly acclaimed L4D2, This time we are reunited with the cast of the original L4D. The Sacrifice is a prequel to the previous DLC ‘The Passing’ which saw the L4D2 cast cross paths with the original cast, well three quarters of the cast anyway, you may have noticed Bill didn’t feature in ‘The Passing’. This DLC fills in the details on Bill’s whereabouts.
The first thing to say about ‘The Sacrifice’ it has been released for both L4D and L4D2. If you choose to buy the L4D version you get the campaign mode set in the original L4D universe so you have no melee weapons or any of L4D2’s special infected.

If you choose to buy it for L4D2 you get the sacrifice campaign mode set in the L4D2 universe, with the L4D original cast plus all the new guns, melee weapons and special infected. You also get the ‘No Mercy’ campaign from L4D again set in the L4D2 universe but playable with the original cast (all be it slightly tweaked for the special infected). I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t get it for L4D2, the graphics are better, the weapons are better and the special infected are better.


The Sacrifice follows our survivors through the docks, a train yard and the shore of a small Georgian town, ultimately leading you to the bridge where the two groups of survivors meet in ‘The Passing’DLC. The campaign rather disappointingly is only three parts long, which when compared to the games standard campaigns which are all four or five stages long you can’t help but feel a little short changed. Although the action is as furious as ever we are also missing a midpoint of action, there is no going to get coke from the shop or holding an elevator half way through the level; this ultimately shortens the play time to about 35 mins.

The story’s climax comes when after starting three generators to lower the bridge, one generator fails and your party has the tough choice of sending one man (or Woman) down to turn it back on to save the lives of the whole group but in the process will sacrifice himself (or Herself) to the horde (in single player the choice is made easier by the fact that it will always be you). And rather than being treated to a sweeping cut scene of your chosen survivor being mauled by the horde the game just fade to the credits, it would have been nice to see our hero struggling to fight off the infected before finally being overrun and putting his shotgun in his mouth and ending it all but all we get are the credits. I think that Valve have really missed a trick here.

Despite my massive amount of negativity during this review I did really enjoy playing as the original L4D cast again it’s just a shame the story doesn’t quite live up to the very high standards of the original games.

On the plus side both ‘The Sacrifice’ and ‘No Mercy’ campaigns are available to play in L4D2’s vast array of multiplayer modes, this is where the DLC will get most of its use with Versus, Survival, and Scavenge modes all playable on both maps.

With its two campaigns and multiplayer compatabitly ‘The Sacrifice’ is a decent supplement to an already brilliant game, the inclusion of the ‘No Mercy’ story which in my opinion is the best of both the games is a stroke of genius . I just wish they’d given a bit more thought to the ending.

For ‘The sacrifice’ campaign I would give it a 6/10 but for the DLC as a package it well worth an 8/10 so go reload your shotgun and fill your chainsaw with gas cause there’s plenty more killing to do yet.

I would prefer to hear about both good and bad points rather than just the good.
Least i know now if i pick it up, it'll be when it's cheaper lol

I've played it for both games. I hated the way it ended. I also hated how all my achievement progress got reset in L4D. But playing No Mercy in L4D2 more than makes up for it. Best campaign, with the better group of survivors in the better game. Awesome.

I'll be getting this when I re-buy Left 4 Dead 2.

I really must get into these games properly. I own the first one but have hardly touched it. I believe it's fantastic co-op fun!

It will take over your life Asurans. I rented it and kept it for about 2 months, playing it everynight before I finally bought it.

There are quite a few of us on here with L4D2 mate, and i'm sure we can get a few of us together for some zombie killing fun.

Most probably next Tuesday or Thursday, as we've the guitar Hero night on Sunday. And wife should be back at college those nights!
