Re: female characters
Haven't personally played it myself, but Bayonetta is a recent one. There's also WET and Tomb Raider.

There are 3 tomb raider games now I think.
Perfect Dark Zero is a female lead too.
Then there is zoey in L4d and rochelle in L4D2

Re: female characters
The Demo wasn't too bad I thought. You could always play Left 4 Dead 2 and play as Rochelle .

Re: female characters
Yeah, what rick said. I was thinking that you should look out for games that allow a certain customisation of the character because then you could be a gurlz.
Oblivion, Saints Row, Sims, Mass Effect(???), Dragon Quest (???), Fallout (???), Test Drive Unlimited, (though nr 2 is out soon)...
I still remember meeting up with Kent in my Test Drive Unlimited car club. he couldn't take his eyes of me... I was wearing green hotpants and a VERY open top, mind you.
But lets not forget Borderlands.
And who's to say the rookie in Halo ODST was a guy...?

Worrying
Re: female characters
In both Mass Effect 1 & 2 you can play as a female and decide how she should look with the character editor. They're both great games, well I think they are anyway for what my opinion is worth

Re: female characters
Wet and Mirrors Edge are two of my all time faves now. Wet just takes a lot of getting used to, I wasn't really feeling it fully until after two play through. Bayonetta is also an immensely enjoyable romp even if it is all nonsense story wise.
As already said most RPGs have good character options, I think the most I have seen have been in Dragon Age Origins where I also managed to get my lady into a foursome ( very tricky indeed)

I didn't like mass effect :[ but I am playing saints row 2 just now lol
Wet seemed okay but I was hopping for a more serious game so I was disappointed a bit.
