Modern Warfare 2 Surpasses $1 Billion in Retail Sales

Activision Blizzard, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) announced today that Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 continues to set sell-through records crossing the $1 billion mark in retail sales worldwide since its launch in November, according to internal Activision estimates.

In its first five days alone, the game sold an estimated $550 million worldwide, outpacing five-day worldwide theatrical box office gross figures for such films as Avatar, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and The Dark Night, according to internal Activision estimates and boxofficemojo.com.

"Call of Duty:Modern Warfare 2 has exceeded our expectations and shattered theatrical box office and video game records," said Robert Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. "There are only a handful of entertainment properties that have ever reached the $1 billion mark, which illustrates the power of the Call of Duty franchise and mass appeal of this game."

I Knew it would do well !! its the best game out there.

I wonder if they would have sold any less if,

1 - it wasn't heavily discounted in certain retailers on release. (not that i'm complaining as my copy was from sainsburys lol)

2 - There hadn't been the press uproar about the so called Terrorist level.

I'm certainly not knocking it, as it is a phenomal acheivement. And i do love the game, although i can't seem to get excited about the online multiplayer for some reason.

I think gamers are growing deaf to the controversial game news. The only people who listen to it are those that wouldn't play anyway.

I think the sales have been helped by a huge install base now thanks to the price drops of xbox and PS3. Probably also eased along by people buying multiple copies. I have read forums where several PC gamers quickly got rid and then got the console version and multi console owner who bought the PS3 version going to buy the xbox one due to the online problems at launch.
