Super Mario World challenge
My mate Liam's coming round tomorrow afternoon to play some games. We usually try and set ourselves a good gaming challenge which usually involves trying to do a full run of a chosen game in a day. Just to try and get through the retro backlog really. Last time, we completed the Xbox original classic "Farenheit", start to finish. We started pretty late, so it was half four in the morning when we finished and our brains were seriously knackered by the end. There are some fairly easy QTE's at the final boss, but our exhausted minds simply couldn't cope with them properly. It was pretty scary actually. I have respect for these peeps that do 24 hour game-a-thons for charity after that evening!
Anyway, tomorrow's challenge - should it go ahead - is to nail all 96 levels of Super Mario Brothers on the SNES! I really can't remember how long this takes, as it's a while since I did a full run through, but we're gonna have a good bash, fuelled by crisps and pop and some takeaway foulness from our local pizzeria Al Pacino's! Let's hope we can remember all the secret exits between us.
This could all fall through yet, if he can't make it, but there's the plan! I might put some pics up depending on how good the vita's camera is! (Not very good, I imagine), and my camera has packed up.

Cheers for the offer Al, but I'm full of cold, and Its the first full weekend off I've had in a few weeks. So will probably just be having a quiet night in with the Wifey.

Well, we had a good evening and learnt quite a bit. We learnt that the PS Vita camera is pants as you can see by these shots..... We learnt that Al Pacino's must sell their Kebabs at a loss as they are mahoosive! We also learnt that we dont quite have the required retro skills to blaze through Mario World anymore. It was tough going in places. Games definitely use a different skillset these days. It was definitely harder than i've ever found it to be before. We bashed through about 40 levels and then we got a bit bored and decided to play GTA: Vice City which provided the final lesson, which is that GTA: Vice City plays like a bag of wank!! The shooting and Melee action is so frustrating these days, that I wanted to destroy the damn disk!
It makes you realize just how far games have come, and how lucky we are today. GTA never had the best controls ever, but they were tolerable back then. Now, they are just horrible in places compared to modern stuff! Still, I'll persevere and play through it. The music is great!
Here endeth the lesson!

Re: Super Mario World challenge
The way you've put those pictures in, it looks like your dog is waiting patiently for some kebab.
I find that the 16 bit era games tend to hold up better these days than when games started going 3D - try playing some of the early PS1 titles and you'll probably have a little cry!
It's crazy, but it's much easier going to play some Mega Drive than to play some PS1. Having said that I am going to be delving into my PS1 collection soon as I have decided to have a bit of a cull. A little upsetting, but room has to be made!

Re: Super Mario World challenge
Love the pics clone!
Doggy looks cute.
Pikey snacks from lidl
But not happy that your SNES does not have its own little shelf or trolley space, throwing her on the carpet like that is just bad for the old girl!

Re: Super Mario World challenge
You're right Waggles on both fronts. She was waiting a long time for some Donner meat! I'm not giving her that crap though! Lol! Still, it's probably better than Bakers.
You're right about early 3D stuff too. I much prefer 16-bit 2D stuff. It holds up much better than early 3D. PS1 and N64 games are mostly as ugly as sin, and the early stuff on PS1 is terrible. I played Vampire Hunter D and Excalibur 2555ad on PS1 the other month and they were terrible, I just couldn't carry on.

Re: Super Mario World challenge
Haha, I REALLY wanted Excalibur back in the day - played the demo over and over but for whatever reason never ended up getting the full game...
Here's a good example of something completely unplayable now:

That looks startlingly good! I gotta buy that!!
I'm building my PS1 collection again slowly, but I might pass on that one!

Yeah I love Alundra, still got my copy.
Alundra 2 is not so good though - ever play that one? Had a complete graphic overhaul (or should that be underhaul???)

Lol! No! Never fancied it!
I don't have a copy of Alundra now. I'm gonna get one eventually. I just downloaded it on the Vita though.
