Ok! So who’s for some retro, crazy, mindless, random, shooty action?
Tower Of Guns is a hectic, old school style FPS, presented in a pretty neat cell shaded style; sort of Borderlands esque I would say. It delivers Rogue like elements to proceedings in that, jumping into a game of TOG is like waking up next to the Mrs each morning; you just never know what’s going to be thrown at you next. Everything is completely different each time. Whether it be the level layouts, the pick-ups available or the types and positions of enemies within those levels. It is a true cacophony of random japery tombola-ness!
Shenanigans commence with you selecting a weapon and a perk. At the start these are very limited, and you will die a lot. A thin plot is selected for you and this is described by some random characters within on-screen text windows. Sometimes you are a burglar, other times you are a pest controller or a scientist. To be honest, I didn’t really have time to read the dialogue as I was busy charging around rooms avoiding masses of foes. Whatever the story, you are tasked with ascending the titular Tower Of Guns and wiping out various (Random) bosses en-route.
Enemies range from static gun emplacements and various launchers that fire things like circular saws and cannon balls, to large floating mega tanks of various sizes. Defeated foes drop various (random) pickups, including wonga, health, and badges that offer various aids or hindrances, such as improved luck, increased difficulty, shields, increased critical hit chance etc. The other mechanic is the collection of XP which upgrades your weapon of choice on the fly as you progress. Again, these are all random so you will find that one run is a lot easier than the next. It’s luck of the draw.
The one thing you can control in Tower Of Guns is the pacing to some extent. The game is designed as a pick up and play for a quick blast kind of affair and, in Normal mode, you only need to get through about six stages or so to reach the end. If you fly through, you can reach the end in maybe 20 minutes or so. If you so wish though, you can spend time searching through the (random) level layouts for various secrets and hidden areas. This is a really good element to the game as they are really well done. Sometimes you will not believe how many secrets you have missed at the end of a stage, and will be left scratching your swede. There is also an excellent secret involving the loveable little hugbots that you encounter at the start of stages. The game gives you a little hint about this now and again.
So to sum up!! Tower Of Guns is a great blast. You have to remember that it is designed for a quick sesh. It’s not a long winded epic. I wanted to emphasize this fact because I have seen the odd review that has scored the game poorly for lacking content!! I believe these reviews have somewhat missed the essence of the game. Fiddlesticks I say!! Once you unlock decent weapons and perks, things can get really hectic, particularly when you play Endless and Random modes. This is where things hot up properly as you get more radical variances between the helps and hindrances the game throws at you. You can either end up with mega powers or overwhelming adversity!
An excellent blast, and considering the price of £11.99, a game I can only recommend heartily!
I shall score it: 8 fake walls out of 10

Great fun review of a great fun game!
For me this is a 9/10 and a must buy for all who enjoy fun gaming!
Its such a joy when you level up your gun to 5 and get 4 extra jumps and fire lasers bombs too!

Nice review there Colne, sounds like a fun game and the idea of it being different each time really adds to the longevity.

Me too mate. I get it with any old style shooter. Serious Sam, duke nukem etc. I think it's the ramps and jumps that do it for me. I can play modern shooters no problem.

Nice review matey, one I'd consider in a sale, but otherwise I'm trying to avoid unnecessary game spends at the moment.
