How to get the most out of your brand new purchase - An easy way!

I've started a new habit when playing a new game (which isn't for review) that enables me to experience gaming in an old-school style and its very simple to do. Go to your preferences and switch off all notifications. Therefore no bing for when an achievement pops and no pop-ups whenever someone comes online allowing full immersion into your brand new game. It's awesome. Without the constant bing you forget all about the achievements and just go and do whatever you fancy doing.

I did this with AC3 last night and had great fun as I just decided to go wandering about and exploring without having to worry if I was unlocking an achievement or not. THe only downside is you don't know if anyone invites you to a party or sends you a message which can be a minor bugbear and I hope a future update allows you to pick and choose what notifications you receive. But it certainly made me feel like old school gaming all over again!

Nice idea....but I'd probably be paranoid about missing an achievement! Might give it a try.

I do this sometimes, usually if I'm playing a coop game with a mate as the notification always comes up on my screen.

To be honest I'm not fussed about cheevs anyway, but it's always when I turn off the notifications that someone will send me a message lol

I don't bother as my brain actually tunes these message out unless I'm looking out for them so even with notifications turned on I miss achievements popping, friends coming online and people sending messages/invites. I just do a periodic check from time to time as otherwise a few hours later I might see an invite and think Oppps...

I did this for a while and I agree it is quite a refreshing experience I turned them back on a while back but may give this another go next week when Halo comes out

Best way round this is to appear offline. I try to do that when playing co-op with the missis. No interruptions and no dark scowls from the person sat next to me as I check the message. If you're appearing offline you wont get invites, problem solved!

Im with Graham, I would panic about missing a cheevie, I LOVE that plink!!!

I'm one of the lucky people that still games they way I did in the old school days, but I still sometimes set myself to appear offline to avoid some notifications. A good way to keep on track if anyone sends you messages is to have a Raotr client open on your pc. Then every so often you can just glance at your PC and if it is flashing you have a message or invite.

I noticed the update-before-last moved pop ups to the side of the screen.

But I'm with everyone else - If I miss a cheevo I will DIE.

It's fun to do on a new game then when done check and see how many you got without being aware.

88mph is hard to reach in a 1liter VW polo. Maybe you should have choosen a better time machine .
